veryroundbird: (yes perfect)

trying to get into the habit of posting regular tabletop game summaries here! my regular game group recently ended the second arc of our chuubo's game, which feels like it's at a good stopping point, so we're trying out some new stuff while we gear up for whatever long thing we're playing next!

this time we're playing Blood Apart, a game I wrote in 2020 while fiddling around with the Belonging Outside Belonging style of GMless game writing that comes from Dream Askew/Dream Apart. it is, in many ways, a love letter to my background as a vampire larper. i'd never actually gotten to playtest it, so we're finding out how it actually works in practice.

the characters are:

  • Percival "Percy" Baselard, the Sorcerer: former occult society member who ate his sire's soul and fled to Venice, which is ruled by a vampire who hated that guy. Hot gay party boy with blue hair. Played by Jesse.
  • Elegia d'Este, the Noble: Notable singer from French Algeria whose sire decided to scoop her out of a place she felt was "beneath" her in a white lesbian's burden sort of way. Expected to be an extension of her sire in a way that is surely not going to go poorly for anyone when she fucking snaps. Played by Degen.
  • Dorothea Merlo, the Silent: The youngest of the group; she likes things tidy and shares an apartment with her dead twin sister's ex-boyfriend and accidental killer. Soft-voiced with a soft smile and soft footsteps such that you never hear her coming, which is good considering that she's a serial killer. Likes things tidy. Played by me.
  • Leander "Leah" Lupo, the Wildkin: The oldest of the group; good at turning into a wolf and killing people really messily. He acts as a kind of late-night delivery guy for people who need absolutely no questions asked. Played by Geo.

accidentally making the /latest page make it look like this site has an arknights fandom that's not just me. anyway the project to port my fics to dreamwidth is complete so now everything is properly mirrored at [community profile] veryroundbirdfics which also now has a cool custom layout

looking forward to getting back to being a chuubo's player in a few weeks although i've been super enjoying wanderhome and feel like i've been flexing interesting different muscles since the game explicitly removes violence from the stage. adding more tools to my game toolbox. also i think i'm starting to feel like i'm hitting my stride with running chuubo's which is nice!

herb garden's coming along; i have a shitton of cilantro and mint already and i know the basil will pop off because basil just does that. the pepper plant pigeon mostly ate is finally getting new leaves, too (along with the fig plant that accidentally got dried out, which now has a fourth leaf coming)

bought a new flagpole for the house and a progress pride and lesbian pride flag pair which will not get here for pride month but WILL get here for 4th of july, so that we can stand for the flag etc

Today was the epic conclusion to the Lady Blackbird I've been playing with some friends!  AND OH MAN: EPIC.  There was actual crying on the part of more than one player when one of the characters died.  (...I may have started it.)

It was really kind of cool because although the game's story setup sort of aimed for a major plot being the titular character's romantic decision between her lover and fiancé, the Pirate King Uriah Flint, and the captain of the ship transporting her, Cyrus Vance, the major decision that she ended up having to make was between Uriah and... her bodyguard-slash-bff Naomi.  It was also kind of hella cool because Lady Blackbird's main flaw was really her self-centeredness, and then she ends the arc by dying for someone else TwT

And I mean, like, the ending, oh man, oh man, the whole ending sequence was totally awesome.  tl;dr there was much awesome to be had and I had a great time playing Naomi.

I really ended up liking the system because it's built for character development and also tends to be nicely cinematic if you get the right group of players, which we definitely had.  (We also had a really kickass GM, which helped a lot.)

Anyway, squee.  It was fun, and I'm going to miss playing it.
