star wars: the last jedi hot takes (I liked it!)
I want to keep this pretty short; tldr I liked it, Rian Johnson could have written a Star Wars movie just for me, and it would have looked a lot like this. The Force belongs to the people! Your parents are unimportant and it's fine! Last-ditch lightspeed heroic sacrifices! YMMV, but I am way more into Luke Skywalker being a bitter old hermit wracked by guilt over a momentary but catastrophic bad decision than any other iteration of Luke Skywalker because that is my character #aesthetic
The main thing overarching thing about the movie that I really, really thought was great was that it's ultimately a movie about failure and being wrong. Characters, both heroic and villainous, are constantly failing and being wrong about things throughout the movie, in various degrees from "minor" to "major loss of life"; by the end, the heroes are learning from those mistakes.
And it was fun! I thought it was very fun, from porgs to back-to-back frenemy lightsaber fighting to punching a hole in capitalism, down to the last "unstoppable badass luke is a LITERAL ILLUSION" fight, which, regardless, was still a treat to watch. (I noticed on my second viewing that he doesn't leave footprints, where Kylo Ren definitely does, and they make a bit point of showing how easy trails are left on that ground; that's some nice attention to detail) Like, some of the structuring was weird—it could have taken off one plot element before it left the house—but overall, it was everything I could have wanted in my Star Wars.
Also: Rose!!!! ROSE!!!!!
Also also: I'm pretty sure Vice Admiral Holdo and Leia definitely were A Thing at some point after Leia and Han separated. I will go down with this ship.
Also also also: this rian johnson-endorsed song by the mountain goats, about The Ultimate Jedi Who Wastes All The Other Jedi And Eats Their Bones, which is not new but I feel the need to remind everyone about.
