Food

Lean pork supercharges muscle growth after workouts

Scientists discovered that lean pork builds muscle more effectively post-workout than high-fat pork, even with identical protein levels. Using advanced tracking techniques, they found that fat content blunted the body’s muscle-building response. The results contradict previous findings about fattier foods enhancing synthesis, suggesting that food form and processing matter.

I immediately thought of two things:

* Bodybuilders already favor lean meat for muscle-building. They may have noticed what works better.

* Does this apply to other types of meat besides pork? What about plant proteins?

Drawtober 2025 Prompt 16. Flat

Title: No.16 Flat
Artist: leecetheartist
Rating: G
Fandom: original work
Content Notes: Dip pen and nib, the ink is Diamine's Merry and Bright shimmer, which I couldn't get to shimmer for you. The bits that do shimmer are gold against the green but it's a subtle one. Usual, no pencil, no rubbing out, and just something that vaguely came out of my head. I probably should've looked at some references. But why start now?

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Gaming

This cozy game replaces doom-scrolling with ocean exploring. Every creature you spot trains underwater robots in real time

A new cozy game, created by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, invites people to trade doom-scrolling for mini-games driven by ocean exploration.

Using underwater footage, FathomVerse trains players to spot and classify marine animals through a variety of minigames.

“The images you see in FathomVerse are real photos collected by ocean researchers,” the creators note on the game’s website.

This seems like an effective way to learn a lot about marine biology.

It reminds me very much of educational / science games in Terramagne.  Can you imagine Aida Finn with this?  Especially on a day when the weather wasn't conducive to diving in person.

Politics

The German media show a systematic bias against the Palestinian struggle

In Germany today, as in many mediatized societies, our worldview is filtered through the media. But the media are not simply mirrors of reality. They are actors embedded in power structures, shaping what counts as truth, what can be said, and what must remain unspoken. As Herman and Chomsky taught decades ago, the media manufacture consent. And in the German case, when it comes to Palestine, that consent has for years helped consolidate Israel’s central objective: to secure as much land as possible with as few Palestinians as possible.

Birdfeeding

Today is cloudy and warm.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.  Yesterday we saw a small flock of geese heading south.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 10/15/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 10/15/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 10/15/25 -- I planted 12 'Delft Blue Mix' grape hyacinths along the log garden in the house yard.

EDIT 10/15/25 -- I planted 25 iris reticulata around the house yard.

EDIT 10/15/25 -- I hauled out the hose to water the new picnic table and septic gardens.

EDIT 10/15/25 -- I watered the house yard plants and the old picnic table garden.

EDIT 10/15/25 -- I watered the telephone pole garden and savanna seedlings.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

Settling

Apparently it had been more than four years since the last time my father and I meaningfully settled our accounts with one another. I suspect I hadn't pushed for it because I thought I was heavily in debt. Four years covers an entire hot water heater, kitchen cabinet, tablet, and various other gribblies. But in the end, I had started off ahead and ended up still ahead though by about half. I definitely need to pick out some more things to go on eBay, though.

At some point I'll make more Accidental Advent posts. It's been about five weeks now and I can honestly say this is one of my better ideas! I drifted away from the shelf of floppy comics and have been working through piles on the mounded desk in my bedroom but it needs attention more so this is a feature not a bug! Anyway, I have definitely been reading and watching a lot of stuff that I wasn't getting to otherwise and honestly, I think I've been shuffling a third or so to the sale box. (Percentages may change as I go, but at least I'll know what I have even if it's all keepers?)

Built MG Astray Blue Frame D, though she needs a few stickers before I declare her actually done. Built an EG Strike that I found while straightening up, and then built an HG Dagger because of a conversation on discord. The Dagger was a nice build, the EG was good, and Blue Frame was sure a build. ^^;; And this morning built an easier-than-it-looked brick kit called Keiji that M got me about 200 years ago. IDK if it counts as Accidental Advent or just normal backlog clearing, hmm. (It's honestly me avoiding the Throne Zwei and its incredibly poor color separation, more likely.)

Overnight I noticed that the one blog doing the Astray 'translations' (despite claiming to be translations with multiple editors, they are clearly just MTL and have a shitton of errors like basic name and term mistakes) had some chapters of Destiny Astray B up and since I apparently don't know when to stop touching the electric cupcake, read through them. And seriously, I feel gross for having done it. Seriously, they're gross. Where VS Astray is just bad fanfic, D Astray B is gross. Like half a chapter over-describing the female performers in a strip-club and that's after repeated descriptions of Elza naked. WHY. This is not what I want in my giant robot stories dammit.

This all started from quietly Lensing a few things in one of the old black-spine Dengeki books. And finding actually interesting material.

Quick Rec Wednesday

Rec time! Did you read/watch/listen to something you really liked and would love other people to know about, too? Don't have the time or energy to make a full promo post, or think such a small thing doesn't merit a separate entry?

Here's your chance to share with the class! Just drop a comment with a link and maybe a couple of words in description. No need to overthink things, it can be as simple as Loved this! or OMG, look at that!. (You don't need to keep it short, though, write as much as you want.)

Check out the previous entries, too!

FFA DW Post #2369 - I'm not one of the Tetris nominators, but I would happily reject the square.

Not because it's boring, but because its bland exterior conceals a capacity for great evil. It's inflexible in its perfect symmetry, a weighty monolith of a piece when I desire fluidity and adaptability.

I'm shocked and concerned to find that the character nominations under Tetris only include I Tetrimino, L Tetrimino, T Tetrimino and Z Tetrimino. What about the square, people?

Drawtober 2025 Prompt 15. Glitter

Title: Glitter
Artist: leecetheartist
Rating: G
Fandom: original work
Content Notes: Dip pen and nib, the ink is Diamine's Walnut. And while it is a perfectly servicable drawing ink, a dark sepia - it is an unfortunate ink to come up in the inkvent calendar on the day that Glitter is the prompt. *sigh* So it's the first prompt that I feel I have not really stepped up to the plate properly in execution. The deadly glitter I was imagining in this basilisk's eye I don't think really comes across. Maybe if I put a wash over everything except the eye? But I wasn't brave enough to do it.

Well maybe it doesn't really mean it. My basilisk/cockatrice usually wear sunglasses anyway because they tend to be friendly types.
The people at my Community Shed's art group burst into laughter when I referred to it as a killer chook.
Pen and Ink Cockatrice or Basilisk

An age of joy – An interview with Charlie Toledo

Arwen Spicer: Based on your experience, how can an individual have an impact on healing our world?

Charlie Toledo: I think the most important thing is to focus on what you want to do. When you’re doing what you think you should do, that’s never going to be as successful as what you want to do, what you freely choose to do.
