dorchadas: (Slime)

I've been watching 真の仲間じゃないと勇者のパーティーを追い出されたので、辺境でスローライフすることにしました (shin no nakama ja nai to yūsha no pātī o oidasareta no de, henkyō de surō raifu suru koto ni shimashita, "Because I was banished from the hero's party for not being a true comrade, I've decided to live the slow life in the countryside", Eng: "Banished from the Hero's Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside") because it's not an isekai but the background is very similar, because they're both drawing from the same well.

In Banished, everyone in the world is born with a 加護 (kago), which Weblio defines as:
神仏が力で衆生を守り助けること, "The protection extended by the gods and the Buddha to all living things"
but the English subtitles translate as "Blessing." Now when I first heard that, I thought back to that passage in Tanakh:
"See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; and I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, to devise skilful works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, and in cutting of stones for setting, and in carving of wood, to work in all manner of workmanship. And I, behold, I have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and in the hearts of all that are wise-hearted I have put wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded thee."
-Exodus 31:2-7
But it's not, it's literally RPG classes. You are Assigned Fighter At Birth and it makes you want to go punch things. Seriously, it's a plot point that if your 加護 relates to fighting and martial prowess your personality changes so you become more likely to reach for fighting as the first tool to solve problems.

Now, there are some cool worldbuilding side effects that result from this. We're told that 加護 are assigned completely randomly with no regard for the parents' 加護 or the child's station in life, so the son of a farmhand can get the 加護 of the shōgun and the daughter of a woodcutter can get the 加護 of the archmage, but by the same token, a princess can get the 加護 of the thief. It makes me wonder how hereditary nobility even developed in this world--surely they'd have some kind of caste system that your 加護 sorted you into, right?

Well, maybe that comes into play late in the story, because I'm not that far in, but at the point I'm at we've learned that the reason the main character left the hero's party is because his 加護 is the 導き手 (michibikite, "Guide"), and you might think, "Oh, so he's good at tracking or wilderness survival or-" but you're wrong. The effects of that 加護 are basically "You gain +30 levels when it manifests but you can't gain any extra XP", so his 加護 is literally that he's the overpowered tutorial character you get in the early parts of the RPG but who eventually leaves your party, either because the story makes them or because their stat growth is low enough that relying on them too much will eventually handicap you.

And that's why I'm writing this post, because even in a pure fantasy series it's just based on video game tropes. Anime like KonoSuba literally have people carry their character sheets in their pockets and Banished isn't that bad, but it still has a character that people in the discussion I read kept referring to with a Fire Emblem term because it's such a well-known character type over there. And I think the reason for all of this is that people don't read the original sources. The author of Banished did not grow up reading classic fantasy, they grew up playing video games and reading books inspired by video games (specifically Dragon Quest and games based on it), the same way that modern D&D designers did not grow up reading Fritz Leiber and C.L. Moore and Robert E. Howard, they grew up playing D&D and reading D&D books and modern D&D reflects that--it's based on D&D, not on pulp adventurers. The biggest problem I have with isekai series--and maybe with Banished, we'll see--is that they'll often set up a really cool background and premise and then go absolutely nothing with it in favor of relying on standard video game tropes. Even Frieren, as good as it is with its exploration of mortality, is still like, "Oh, we need a priest so we have a healer" at one point.

And it's easy to look at the development of fantasy in Japan and say, well, that's just how it is, since they got their idea of elf-dwarf-orc fantasy not from The Lord of the Rings, but from Dragon Quest, which got it from Wizardry. But there are plenty of old Japanese fantasy series like Escaflowne or Magic Knights Rayearth that don't rely on video game logic. Hell, Record of Lodoss War is literally based on a Sword World tabletop campaign and it still doesn't have characters talking about their classes and levels! This is a modern development and while I occasionally look at one of these series and think about playing a game in that setting--I'll admit, Banished reminds me a lot of how Earthdawn took a lot of D&D tropes like classes and monster-filled dungeons and levels and worked an explanation of them into the world--but I'm getting a little tired of this popping up everywhere. We'll see if Banished does anything interesting with it as the series goes on.

If anyone has any recommendations for recent Japanese fantasy that's not based on That Summer the Writer Spent Playing Dragon Quest III (or worse, reading books by people who spent a summer playing Dragon Quest III) let me know.

Today is cloudy and cool.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 5/20/26 -- We went out to run errands and do some plant shopping.  I found some things on my list but not everything.  Stuff is just so much less consistent and reliable nowadays.  :/

EDIT 5/20/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 5/20/26 -- I planted the 'Sunsugar' cherry tomato in a pot at the new picnic table.

Everyone needs contact comfort sometimes. Not everyone has ample opportunities for this in facetime. So here is a chance for a cuddle party in cyberspace. Virtual cuddling can help people feel better.

We have a cuddle room that comes with fort cushions, fort frames, sheets for draping, and a weighted blanket. A nest full of colorful egg pillows sits in one corner. There is a basket of grooming brushes, hairbrushes, and styling combs. A bin holds textured pillows. There is a big basket of craft supplies along with art markers, coloring pages, and blank paper. The kitchen has a popcorn machine. Labels are available to mark dietary needs, recipe ingredients, and level of spiciness. Here is the bathroom, open to everyone. There is a lawn tent and an outdoor hot tub. Bathers should post a sign for nude or clothed activity. Come snuggle up!

Lyrical Nanoha: magical girl spin-off of the Triangle Heart eroge VN series Prisma Illya: magical girl spin-off of Fate/stay night + Fate/hollow ataraxia eroge VNs Madoka Magica: Not a direct spin-off but creators wrote/directed several VNs

There's plenty of similarities in the marketing strategies, themes and motifs, and some more direct shared production history (Shinbo working on both Nanoha and Madoka, Urobuchi writing a Fate prequel, etc), but I'm intrigued by the... otaku crucuble of the VN scene suggested here, I guess. no thesis just putting strings on a corkboard and going "someone should check this out huh"

Five years Laila update

Happy birthday Laila!

2026-05-13 - Laila birthday party
Holding her Coco doll.

The last time I wrote we were nervously looking at Laila's upcoming surgery. Now the surgery is over and so is almost all of the recovery. The week after next, she'll be going into the doctor for a checkup to see if she's ready to go back to normal physical activity again. I hope so, because she's ready to spin and flip and go to the park. She's been ready for months. She feels fine and while she intellectually understands the restrictions, which I'm honestly pretty impressed with--for me at least, she's never thrown a tantrum or complained when I asked her not to spin in place or do a somersault or told her we can't go to the park, and she always points to her head and says "it's gotta heal"--I can tell she doesn't really understand the reason for them.

I do regret to inform you all that she's brainrotted, though. Not six-seven, but she has a particular song she'll random want to listen to. Over, and over, and over. I can't find a YouTube video but it's the last track on this Yoto card. At random moments she'll see her Yoto and say, "Yoto!" then turn to one of and say, "Yoooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuu put on Bounce To the Beats" (which is a lyric from the song). She's branched out a bit lately and started listening to Frog and Toad stories and Raffi songs, but "Rhythm of Happiness" is still her #1.

Along with her love of music, she's started singing songs in earnest. She's also started playing ball, though until we're medically cleared it's just rolling it across the floor. She'll come sit over near me and say "Roll" and try to play ball with me even while I'm at work. We also had a fun time sliding her Ariel doll across the floor, that sent her into fits of laughter.

I have no idea how school is going. She's having her IEP served at a different (but still local) school, but we get no updates from the teachers and when we heard Laila muttering "Go back to the classroom" to herself, we emailed and asked if she was running out of the room. They emailed back and told us no, but there was another kid who was allowed to go outside to calm down occasionally and maybe that's what she had overheard. To our questions about how she was doing, they just say she's doing great. Her language is getting better and we can have simple conversations now but she still won't tell us much about what she's thinking and she won't tell us what happens at school. Not really unusual for kids, though--we've heard other parents tell us the same thing about their kids.

The sad part is fortunately only sad for us, our parents, and that's that Laila has been waking up at 5:30 or 5:45 a.m. and coming in to wake us up. She used to do this when she was at the grandparents' house but would wake up more like 6:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. with us, and now it's fully shifted to the later time. We really need to start teaching her to play in her room and wait a little bit, until 6:30 a.m. or so. [instagram.com profile] sashagee told me about some clock for children that used shapes and colors to help teach them when to get up and how long they have. I'm sure it'll take a long while to sink in--we still have to remind her to wash her hands, even though she's mastered the other aspects of using the bathroom--but we won't know until we try.

We haven't really had a party yet, just something small with family. We're going to have a bigger party next month and invite some of the people from her class at her old school. Right now, [instagram.com profile] sashagee is thinking a roller rink party, but that's contingent on Laila being cleared for physical activity. We'll know more later. Laila already really likes the idea of roller skating and [instagram.com profile] sashagee is excited to do it with her.

What other ways will she grow and change?

Scientists hatch live chicks from artificial eggs, achieving another huge milestone in their de-extinction program

Colossal Biosciences, known for its ambitious de-extinction projects involving species like the woolly mammoth and thylacine, has announced that it successfully hatched healthy chicks using a completely artificial egg system.

The chicks developed without a biological shell at any stage. Instead, they grew inside an engineered structure designed to imitate and improve on nature’s design.

The achievement could reshape conservation biology, bird reproduction research, and even pharmaceutical manufacturing.

O_O Holy crap that's hard! You might think that faking an egg is easier than faking a uterus. It is not. A uterus is inside a body, so you can fake the casing and input. An egg is inside a membrane or shell outside a body. That shell has a bunch of jobs to do. To fake it, you either have to make something that can do all those jobs, or make a casing with holes for input/output which is not what that embryo expects. I am impressed.

... and of course it's Colossal. Those geeks are busting ass on de-extinction.

Today is cloudy, humid, and hot.  It rained most of yesterday.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 5/19/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I've seen a starling at the hopper feeder.

EDIT 5/19/26 -- I trimmed brush around where I want to plant the vernal witch hazel.  The name means "spring" but they typically bloom in late winter.

A cool breeze is blowing from the west.  It feels like a downdraft.  No storm is visible on the horizon but rain is predicted, so I'm keeping an eye on things.

EDIT 5/19/26 -- I planted the vernal witch hazel at the north edge of the forest yard, near a previous one that has survived so far.  :D

EDIT 5/19/26 -- I planted 20 gladioli in the north notch of the prairie garden.  Surprisingly, at least a couple survived from last year and are putting up leaves.

Already I can see tiny seedlings sprouting from recent sowing of seeds.  Clover is among the fastest; I mix that with grass seed for the walking paths.  Some others are wildflowers.  \o/

Also I uncovered the remaining water jugs that had seedlings in them.  I got 3 milkweed seedlings in that jug.  3 out of the 4 native grasses have several seedlings in each -- little bluestem, northern sea oats, and side-oats grama; only the switch grass didn't sprout there.  So on the whole, mixed results, but for the ones that did work, worth repeating.

EDIT 5/19/26 -- I tallied what pots I have available and what I need.  I forgot to list the tomatoes that I already have though; still need to go back and do that.

I picked and ate the first couple of pea pods.  :D  I love being able to wander around the yard, pick things, and put them in my mouth.

EDIT 5/19/26 -- I sowed a bunch of 'Sugar Ann' snap peas and 'Avalanche' snow peas in pots that didn't already have any.  So far 'Sugar Ann' seems to be growing better and producing earlier than 'Avalanche' but there are flowers and pea pods on both.

I wrote down what tomatoes I have already: chocolate cherry, 'Mr. Stripey' slicer, 'Old German' slicer, yellow pear, 'Santa' grape, and 'Cherokee Purple' slicer.  I got a 4-pack of the chocolate cherries but they aren't doing great and one has already died.  I could use a red or pink slicer, and I'm still looking for fancy striped cherries.

The Novella Question, or, Wow, Marketing is Expensive in Late Stage Capitalism

Many of us are looking at the novella short lists for the popular awards (Hugos, Locus, Nebula) and going, “Ah, another Tor sweep!” When I first got into the Hugo Awards, the short fiction finalists were the magazines: Asimov’s, Fantasy & Science Fiction, and Analog. It also included pieces from short fiction collections from when publishers still let editors put those together, with a smattering of other, lesser known (to me) outlets. I remember the Tordotcom announcement, too! We were excited and we’ve come a long way. Now I get the pleasure of paying almost $30 for a hardcover novella, which I’m not excited about. I'm not made of money, Macmillan!

An 8-year-old boy's backyard discovery literally changed science forever

One summer day, 8-year-old Hugo Deans spotted a cluster of tiny, BB-sized spheres near an ant nest under a fallen log in his backyard. He assumed they were some kind of seed, because that’s what they look like.

But his father, Andrew Deans – a Penn State entomology professor – recognized them instantly as oak galls, unusual plant growths caused by insects.

What he didn’t realize at first was that those little galls were clues to a surprisingly complex relationship between ants, wasps, and oak trees.

Today is cloudy, mild, and wet. It has varied between light rain, pouring rain, and "the air is water" outside. We need the rain, though.

I fed the birds. I haven't seen any.

EDIT 5/18/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I've seen a fox squirrel at the hopper feeder, and a few small birds.

EDIT 5/18/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

It's still drizzling on and off.

I am done for the night.

Half-Price Sale in Polychrome Heroics

May. 18th, 2026 11:49 am
ysabetwordsmith: Damask smiling over their shoulder (polychrome)
[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith
This week, the poetry of Polychrome Heroics is on sale for half price from Monday, May 18 through Sunday, May 24. This series is superhero fantasy. It features themes of heroism, coming of age, diversity, identity kink, family of choice, friendship, and cultural engineering. Sale prices range from $5 to $319, so hopefully there will be something for everyone.

Prices on open epics are locked at the time of opening; however, if anyone wants to donate to open epics and buy poetry, spending $100 will get you the quarter-price rate on the new poems, regardless of the rate on the open epic(s) you support. There are no open epics at present, so you may open one if you wish.

We are repeating the special discount for purchases of $100 or more, in which you get poetry at 25% of its original price instead of 50%. (Note that this increases the amount of poetry you get, rather than reducing the amount of money spent; the point is to get this stuff off of my desk. Yes, I can afford it.) That size of donation also makes you a k-fan which comes with some other perks, like a year-end collection of a poetic series. If several folks want to bundle their orders to make the $100 threshold and have one person send it all, that's okay; you'll get the discount and I'll list all your names as donors, but you'll have to decide amongst you who gets the k-fan credit. If you host a pool, please close it the day before the sale closes, so you have time to collect funds and turn them in on time.

Some of the poems are in sequence of related action, so in places there are prerequisites before a poem can be published. They can be sponsored at any time, just might have to wait for publication until something else gets posted first. Those are marked accordingly. I have also made lists of poems which unlock sequels, and poems which have prerequisites.

Linkback perk: The following poems have verses left to reveal. Boost the signal for this half-price sale and tell me which poem you want to extend.
"A Sense of Weather Changes"
"The Loving Embrace of Night"
"Generations of Cooks Past"
"Homefree and Clear "
"One Bite at a Time"
"Mishpocha"
"Changing Your Nature"
"Besa"

About characters and storylines: The storylines feature multiple characters, so if you want poems about ONE specific character, look closely. The thumbnail descriptions here give some indication who features in each poem. The storyline pages are adding precise, complete information about which characters appear in each poem. If you need more than what's already visible, you can ask me.

About timing: If you want maximum choice, shop early. We usually send a batch of things to my father near the end of a sale, and those poems will be posted as I have time.

About pools: Yes, you can combine your funds with other prompters to get the quarter-price rate. Yes, you can combine your funds with other prompters to buy a bigger poem. Yes, you can offer to match donations by other people. However, the wordsmith is not also a math whiz! After several attempts to find a way that I can work with pools and matches, I have concluded that this is over my head. (I did figure out how to avoid generating fractional pennies, though: all initial prices are now whole dollars, which means they cut evenly into halves and quarters.) So if you want to host a pool or a match, make a post for that in your blog or other venue, then comment here with what you're doing and include a link to wherever the discussion will be. You figure out the poems, you collect the funds, and when stuff is fully funded, you send me the money and the list of what it's for. Then I'll post the goodies. Please close the pool in time to collect donations by the end of the sale, so I can start posting pool poems no later than the day after the sale.

Before placing your order, please check this sale page to see what is still unsold! I will try to update the page as things sell, and it's likely to be the case that some poems will be marked SOLD before appearing in posts. People often buy things in batches, which means that selling gets ahead of posting. Also sometimes people ask for the same thing at the same time, so that not all overlaps are preventable. If you have alternate instructions in case you request something that has just sold, please include that in your message; otherwise I'll email you back and ask what you want to do.

Le's begin with a teacher explaining why they're leaving teaching, and it has little to do with the students themselves and a lot more to do with the environment the students exist in, which lines up pretty well with four of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse: the privileged don't care, (and their grownups are waging war on education), the students are starved of the ability to mature into adults because their instructors cannot provide them with meaningful consequences for their actions, the edtech companies, and now LLMs, are a pestilence on the process of education, and the other people in there have imbibed vocational awe, and worse, believe themselves one of the good teachers because they have some knowledge of one aspect of student difficulties.

Those who wish to peddle the idea that masculinity is in crisis and needs to return to some more macho version of itself are often well out beyond the antisemitic conspiracy line, because it's been a thing for centuries to portray Jewish men as weak and feminine.

Women taking part in a student ritual involving a swim are increasingly finding pictures of themselves in their swimwear published in tabloid magazines. And I have no doubt that many of the photographers staked out there, taking, and selling the pictures of the women will say "it's a public place, and therefore there's no problem with me taking pictures of people in a public place in their swimwear." In much the same way that the people with the pervert glasses filming women and posting the videos online would say there's nothing wrong with recording someone in a public place. Of course, the true answer to how to curb such behavior is to teach the men doing the thing not to do it while they're still impressionable and not fully in the belief that they are the most important being in the world and all others are subservient to them.

Would you like to see a trove of pictures taken by the astronauts on the Artemis II mission? Yes, you would. If you would like them in an more organized fashion, there's an archive of the pictures according to the mission timeline set up. Which is cool, because it was able to use various pieces of public data about the mission, and metadata from the images, to merge the two into a timeline of photography.

Examining studies cited in a blog post from 2016, as well as more recent studies, suggests that instead of knowing a number or percentage of trans youth who then choose to live as cis adults, there needs to be better-quality studies run before any conclusions can be reached. Which doesn't deter lawmakers with agendas, to be certain, but neither does it give them any kind of scientific legitimacy to hide behind.

And more beyond, as always, including dastardly behavior by people elected to positions of power )

"No Faster or Firmer Friendships" has 50 new verses. It belongs to Polychrome Heroics and needs $35 to be complete. Josué reads a funny poem to Maria-Vera.

The weather has been variable here. We got some rain the other day. Seen at the birdfeeders this week: a large mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, a male cardinal, a brown thrasher, a robin, a mourning dove, a gray catbird, and a fox squirrel. I saw a bobwhite quail in the savanna. :D I saw a ruby-throated hummingbird poking around the irises. I've heard the great horned owl but didn't see it. Currently blooming: pansies, violas, sweet alyssum, alliums, marigolds, honeysuckle, snapdragons, lantana, million bells, blue lobelia, petunias, portulaca, nemesia, wild chives, wood hyacinths, columbine, peonies, irises, mock orange, bergamot, Washington hawthorn, blackberries. Green fruit: raspberries. Pink fruit: mulberries.

The Great GASB!

There are major flaws in the accounting standards that shape municipal finance in American cities. But there’s an opportunity too: a chance to comment on — and perhaps change — those standards going forward.

Using standards that only look at roads as “assets” and not as “liabilities" hides their true cost. We cannot sell this road asset to the next town over (consider this 2014 Strong Towns post). The standards merely ask for documentation of the infrastructure, but don’t account for the obligated burden of future replacement. We are watching the consequences of that decision unfold in plain sight. Let me be clear: these are standards not laws. Yet our municipalities are marching themselves off the fiscal cliff because the standards made them do it.

Today is partly sunny, breezy, and humid. It's warm now and supposed to reach the mid-80sF later.

I fed the birds. I haven't seen much activity yet.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 5/17/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 5/17/26 -- I dug a hole in the pawpaw patch.

EDIT 5/17/26 -- I planted the pawpaw.

I startled a bobwhite quail in the savanna, which scuttled into the deep shade of the Midwinter grove. :D 3q3q3q!!! The bright white markings make me suspect this was a male. It is not normal for them to live alone, so I don't know where the rest of the covey is but it's probably around somewhere. This is the first one I've ever seen in the yard, how exciting! But it turns out we've had them all along. I've heard the clear "bob-white" whistle frequently, I just thought it must be some other bird because quail seemed unlikely. I'm delighted to have them around.

I've also seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, plus a starling, at the hopper feeder.

EDIT 5/17/26 -- I trimmed grass in the savanna around where I want to plant a serviceberry seedling.

EDIT 5/17/26 -- I dug a hole in the savanna.

EDIT 5/17/26 -- I planted a serviceberry in the savanna.

I've seen a male cardinal, a robin, a mourning dove, and a fox squirrel.

EDIT 5/17/26 -- I trimmed grass in the savanna around where I want to plant the second serviceberry seedling.

EDIT 5/17/26 -- I dug a hole in the savanna.

EDIT 5/17/26 -- I planted the second serviceberry in the savanna.

EDIT 5/17/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 5/17/26 -- I sowed the four big pots around the septic garden with Green Striped Cushaw, Tiny Butternut, Landrace Zucchini, and Lofthouse Landrace Muskmelon.

I did more work around the patio.

As it is now dark, I am done for the night. *goflopnow*

“Are We Trying To Do Nothing?”

Marblehead is like many Massachusetts towns struggling to balance state-level housing mandates with local implementation. That balancing act has resulted in the town finding a way to technically comply with the MBTA Communities Act while functionally avoiding the construction of any new housing. The town’s creative response meets the requirements of the state mandate by placing most of the zoning capacity on a golf course, where housing is unlikely to ever be built.

Standing at the microphone, hoodie sleeves pushed up, David Modica saw through all the technical “creativity,” recognized what was really happening, and posed this question:

“Are we trying to do nothing?”
