engine running hotter than a boiling kettle
Yesterday, I made garlic & mozzarella milk bread (pics), which turned out quite well even though I forgot the salt due to its weird placement in the recipe (in theory I understand why it is where it is, but in practice it makes no sense to do it that way), but I used salted butter, so I don't think I missed it, and the bread rose just fine.
This afternoon, I finally made this strawberry cheesecake since my cream cheese was well past its use-by date and my heavy cream was getting there! It's still chilling, but when I licked the spatula after pouring the filling into the pie plate, all I really tasted was the five-spice powder. Which I like! But it's not what I would expect given the amount of freeze-dried strawberry powder in it. I guess we'll see how it goes when I cut into it tomorrow. (I also have this issue with nutmeg - even when I try to go easy on it in something, it still is frequently the only thing I taste after using it. I don't know why!)
And then I finally got up and made meatballs with oregano and red wine vinegar to have for lunch during the week. This was a method my grandmother used to use, and it is a great way to eat meatballs (or veggies - she also used to make it with zucchini, and I imagine you could do other types of squash or eggplant this way) - you make and cook the meatballs and set them aside. Then you saute onions in some olive oil (or in the beef fat left if you've fried your meatballs - I do mine in the oven, so I just use oil) and lower the heat and let them caramelize a bit, then you put the meatballs back in , sprinkle about 1/8 cup of dried oregano over them, and the pour in 1/3 - 3/4 cup of red wine vinegar. Be careful as billows of deliciously pungent smoke will rise from your frying pan at that point! Then lower the heat and let it all simmer for 10 or 15 minutes. Good both hot and at room temperature! (I haven't made it with zucchini myself, but for that, you slice and fry or bake your zucchini, and then continue on with the onions/oregano/vinegar as described.)
I have taken the garbage out and started the dishwasher, so now I am prepared for the awfulness of Sunday night. Sigh.

Stone of Tears

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
The second Sword of Truth novel, the longest in the original series to date, begins almost immediately after its predecessor, with Richard and his companions tracking and attempting to execute a screeling, pursuing it to the Mud People village, the Seeker of Truth wishing to marry Mother Confessor Kahlan Amnell there. Visitors from the Palace of the Prophets in Tanimura known as the Sisters of Light come to offer alleged help for Richard with his supposed magical talent thanks to a suppressive collar known as a Rada’Han, although the Seeker, given his collared experience with Mord-Sith Denna, initially refuses.
However, Richard is plagued by headaches without the collar, and ultimately agrees to Kahlan’s request that he do indeed put it on, lest the headaches eventually kill him. Some backstory about the Mother Confessor’s lineage is revealed sometime into the novel, and key to the first Sword of Truth sequel is Richard’s own heritage. A tear in the veil between the living world and the underworld necessitates the titular MacGuffin, the Stone of Tears (which this reviewer assumes actually rhyme with “bears,” which would make its purpose make more sense) critical to sealing the void.
Throughout the story, battles erupt in the Midlands among the divided nations, with the action intensifying towards the end with a race to repair the link to the underworld, accounting for a satisfying, if a little verbose, story that very well continues the Sword of Truth saga, the first sequel one could consider a speedbump into really getting into the series, as its countless sequels aren’t nearly as lengthy. As such, even those that enjoyed the first book might admittedly have trouble getting into the series with its initial follow-up, but completing it is definitely a rewarding experience.

Rose City Comic Con Day 3
This morning I had to choose between the Flanaverse panel, the local ghosts panel and the horny books panel. I hated to choose, but I'd been doing author panels all weekend so I went with Horny on Main:

N. E. Davenport, Aiden Thomas, Gabriella Buba, Isa Agajanian, Casey McQuiston, Rachel Gillig
I enjoyed the panels and didn't really expect them to enlighten me about writing, but this was probably the best talk about writing. ( Mild NSFW )
How The Pros Do It

Scalzi, Kingfisher, Aoki, Anders
Turned out to mostly be about keeping to a writing habit or not. Still fun.
And that was the end of the con. Glad I went, even if I hoped it would be more social this time around. Three of the presenting authors were trans and there were a lot of visible trans people there. With everything going on, that's soothing. Still sucks to be alone with no community, but yeah, experiences like that are still good.
Something about being on my phone between panels at a con felt like an echo of fifteen years ago. Not sure if in a good way or bad, but it just is

Revolutionary Girl Utena

Today we’re highlighting Revolutionary Girl Utena - the shoujo series considered by many to be one of the most influential work in the genre. The story is often praised for its deconstruction of fairy-tale tropes and its handling of themes of gender roles and identity.
The story follows Tenjou Utena who, as a child, was rescued by a prince and received a rose-engraved signet ring from him. This encounter inspired Utena to one day becoming a prince herself. Years later, a teenage Utena now attends Ootori Academy, where she is drawn into a dangerous sword-dueling tournament. Duelists with rings matching Utena’s own all compete for a unique prize: the Rose Bride Himemiya Anthy, who possesses the mysterious power to “revolutionize the world”.
Revolutionary Girl Utena has a strong femslash fanbase due to the romantic nature of Utena and Anthy’s relationship. Utena and Anthy’s canonical interaction uses many popular fannish tropes, such as accidental marriage, shared dormitory, school dances, crossdressing and others. Unsurprisingly, this has made Anthy/Utena the juggernaut pairing of the fandom.

Exploring. Poked around Preston a very little!
Growing. ... SO many tomatoes. More watering system established at plot (so hopefully all the peppers will still be alive and well upon my return). Sowed some probably-past-it seeds.
Observing. A saw a deer on the drive up to Preston! A proper big one with antlers and all! We were very impressed.
Also the local owl Yell.

Not to mention most time spent using AI, even "thoughtfully" is just training. So the minutes trying to command it to do X, avoid Y, to get to Z... Could've easily been spent just finding the references and resources yourself. Jesus. I try to be nuanced but so much motivation behind "AI addiction" as a shortcut is just being babybrained.

"Good morning."
I've watched this episode in bits and pieces throughout most of the day since waking up, making tea, and sitting down with friends in discord. It's playing now as I write this, in fact. I don't have anything to say about the content of the episode, it's a typical episode by Takahashi Yuya, whose stories I don't really enjoy, but what I do want to talk about is the fact that a Kamen Rider show just aired with multiple subtitles for an international audience just an hour after its broadcast in Japan. When I say "international," I don't just mean America either. We got it! Hong Kong got it! Mainland China got it! Brazil got it! Even though I don't have strong feelings about this new show, I can't believe that happened! That it will happen next week! And the week after that! And for a total of roughly fifty weeks all the way to September of next year! I want to sing the praises of Shout Factory, who previously aroused nothing but my ire as whenever they would get the rights to a Toei show, it would mean the rest of us were locked out for good, and I definitely want to praise all the good that Sato Company are doing in Brazil. Before this I had taken Toei's commitment to an "international approach" with a pinch of salt, the missteps of the past few years feeling as if they were taking that salt and rubbing it in the wound, but this... maybe something good is going to come of this; maybe building success here and creating little Kabutack spin-offs for mainland China over the last few years is the beginning of something really good.
Every time I try and talk about things, I realise how tired I am though, so maybe this isn't making much sense. I'm going to bed now, but you who are reading this are assumedly not, so I want to encourage you to go and watch this looped stream of a show that I didn't really care for because maybe you do, and if more people care about these shows, even the ones I don't like, maybe we really will see Kamen Rider become as familiar to audiences here as Marvel comic characters have become. I'd really like that. For now, though, I'm going to sleep.
Good night.
