writing survey xpost from tumblr
Dec. 2nd, 2017 05:01 pmlook, I'm posting to dreamwidth!
tagged by
hyaenid—I felt like this was kind of interesting so I'm cross-posting here. tagging
lassarina here also to keep passing it along I guess, even though tagging doesn't... work like that on dw, whatever
1) How many works in progress do you currently have?
technically six zillion since I rarely ever finish anything apart from very short pieces and one pokémon fanfic I was inspired to actually finish when I was twelve. in “semi-active” development it’s more like 2-3.
2) Do you/would you write fanfiction?
I do! fanfic is what I got my start on and one of my favorite things islet me tell you about my OCs filling out the corners of an expansive universe and getting to do more with stuff that I wanted to see more of in canon.
3) Do you prefer paper books or ebooks?
I think I have a bit of an easier time not getting distracted reading paper books, but I’ve increasingly started buying ebooks just because that way I won’t have to move them eventually.
4) When did you start writing?
I’m pretty sure I started writing my own stories from a pretty young age, although I can’t remember much until the time I was eight or so and saw star wars and was ✨inspired✨ to write more stories about the cool thing I just saw in theaters in microsoft word
5) Do you have someone you trust that you share your work with?
...I’m working myself up to doing more sharing of my work, although there’s like, uh... three-ish people or so I sometimes show things to currently when I have a thing to show, which is not often. (these people are
faypire,
hyaenid,
lassarina and
wizera)
6) Where is your favorite place to write?
technically I do most of my writing on my couch, in a fort of pillows and blankets. I am actually way more productive in a public space with my noise-cancelling headphones on, but also what is leaving the house when I don’t have to
7) Favorite childhood book?
Hmmmm. There’s a couple that stand out; A Wrinkle in Time I think was the first science fiction book I read when I was in elementary school, and it opened up this whole new world to me as far as things stories could be about.
8) Writing for fun or publication?
both! I have aspirations of being a published author although first and foremost I just do really like telling stories to myself.
9) Pen and paper or computer?
computer! I used to write out these big long stories by hand and now I have no idea how I did it??? my ability to write a lot of stuff longhand has completely atrophied :’)
10) Have you ever taken any writing classes?
I took one in high school—one of our options in senior year was creative writing. I think I sort of shot myself in the foot a little by trying to force myself into the mold of what I thought was expected / what everyone else was writing; I think I’d enjoy it a lot more now that a) I’ve figured out how to write short stories sometimes, and b) I’ve figured out that I like some poetry, just not all poetry and c) have actually had life experience that’s not “being a high schooler” and therefore a wider pool of experience/ideas to draw on
oh, and I did actually take one through UChicago’s open-to-the-public classes a couple years ago that I almost forgot—I took it with an IRL friend where we were all workshopping our novels, which was actually pretty neat, since I got a lot of good and actually useful feedback and got to see some pretty meaty projects other people were working on, not just things that were written for one-off assignments.
11) What inspires you to write?
I’m not sure if there’s any one thing—sometimes I have like, this tiny self-contained nugget of an idea that feels like it just wants to become something bigger, sometimes it’s feeling like there’s some story I want to be told in an established canon or genre that isn’t there. And sometimes it’s shitposting that turns into me taking an idea relatively seriously (see: “The Real Housewives of the Court of Stars”, my NaNoWriMo project)
